Somewhere between the whiskey-soaked waltzes of The Pogues and the Americana gumbo of The Gourds lies the music of Josh Lederman y Los Diablos.

Boston singer-songwriter Josh Lederman formed Los Diablos six years ago in an effort to combine his two favorite pastimes: singing and drinking. Now the reigning 'Kings of Irish-Jewish Folk-Punk' have carved out a unique niche in the New England roots scene with their blend of Celtic, klezmer and zydeco musics, fiery live shows, and Lederman's beautifully crafted songs.

Two nights of Balkan music, dance and border-crossing celebration. The Golden Festival is New York's largest Balkan music event, with multiple stages, Balkan and Middle Eastern refreshments, Balkan arts vendors, as well as beautiful Balkan textiles on display. From international stars to local musicians, modern Balkan stylists to folk traditionalists, over 40 bands provide hours of ecstatic listening, dancing and partying. And it's a benefit besides! The profits from this year's festival go to the East European Folklife Center (EEFC) and relief organizations in the Balkans.

Golden Festival is one of New York's best music events. You should definitely add it to your calendar. There are entirely too many bands to list here so check out their website for all the gory details.

Gypsy Festival

October 29th - Novermber 6th

That's right campers. It seems that gypsy music (or at least what young hip Americans call gypsy music) now has it's own festival right here in New York. I'm sure that you're sitting there trying to figure out what combination of Romanian/Rajasthani/Traveller words they're going to use in naming this week long extravaganza but, hold your horses, they're calling it the New York Gypsy Festival.

Tons of bands, tons of slightly out of tune instruments, tons of songs in 9/8 and, yes, don't forget, tons of that New York gypsy attitude. Mark your calendars and keep the week open.

All proceeds will go to hurrican relief. There are apparently a number of bands playing (I've even heard a rumor that the Spunk Lads may make an appearance), however, the only confirmed listing I have is for the Jug Addicts. Think of it as a suprise. Go on down to Freddy's, support a good cause and see what the night may have to offer.

Comprised of jug band veterans culled from the Don't Look Now Jug Band, MetroPolecats, and Pork Chop, the Jug Addicts' repertoire draws from early jazz, tin pan alley, ragtime, and string band music, along with the classic jug band canon.

A Bastille day celebration wouldn't be complete without a Bal Musette - the traditional accordion ball. Musette Explosion explores and re-creates the music of the great French Accordionists of the 30's and 40's: (Gus Viseur, Tony Murena, Joe Privat et al) who, along with Django Reinhardt, borrowed from American Jazz to create Hot Swing, Gypsy Swing and other delightful hybrids, injecting the dance music of its time with both excitement and unparalleled musical creativity.
