Josh Lederman y Los Diablos

Josh Lederman y Los DiablosSunday, January 15th
7:00 pm
Pianos
158 Ludlow Street
Corner of Stanton
Manhattan

Somewhere between the whiskey-soaked waltzes of The Pogues and the Americana gumbo of The Gourds lies the music of Josh Lederman y Los Diablos.

Boston singer-songwriter Josh Lederman formed Los Diablos six years ago in an effort to combine his two favorite pastimes: singing and drinking. Now the reigning 'Kings of Irish-Jewish Folk-Punk' have carved out a unique niche in the New England roots scene with their blend of Celtic, klezmer and zydeco musics, fiery live shows, and Lederman's beautifully crafted songs.

Gypsy Festival

Real GypsiesOctober 29th - Novermber 6th

That's right campers. It seems that gypsy music (or at least what young hip Americans call gypsy music) now has it's own festival right here in New York. I'm sure that you're sitting there trying to figure out what combination of Romanian/Rajasthani/Traveller words they're going to use in naming this week long extravaganza but, hold your horses, they're calling it the New York Gypsy Festival.

Tons of bands, tons of slightly out of tune instruments, tons of songs in 9/8 and, yes, don't forget, tons of that New York gypsy attitude. Mark your calendars and keep the week open.

Freddy's Hurricane Benefit

Bill Carneys Jug AddictsTuesday, October 11th
9:00 pm
Freddy's Back Room
485 Dean St.
Corner of 6th Avenue
Brooklyn

There's a benefit goin' on down at Freddy's Back Room. All proceeds will go to hurrican relief. There are apparently a number of bands playing (I've even heard a rumor that the Spunk Lads may make an appearance), however, the only confirmed listing I have is for the Jug Addicts. Think of it as a suprise. Go on down to Freddy's, support a good cause and see what the night may have to offer.

Bill Carney's Jug Addicts apply the twinning principal utilized by Ornette Coleman's early 60s groups and the Max Roach's Double Quartet to the jug band idiom. The result is a particularly robust and raucous jug band sound free of any archival obsessiveness. Comprised of jug band veterans culled from the Don't Look Now Jug Band, MetroPolecats, and Pork Chop, the Jug Addicts' repertoire draws from early jazz, tin pan alley, ragtime, and string band music, along with the classic jug band canon.

10:30 pm
Freddy's Back Room
485 Dean St. at 6th Ave.
Brooklyn
Free

Robin Aigner is one of New York's finest singer-songwriters who can, armed only with her wry wit, poetic lyrics and melancholy guitar, captivate a crowd of rowdy frat kids and quiet them down to listen to her sing.

She has just started a new band called Royal Pine which is the name for her collaboration with great percussionist Brook Martinez who adds vocals, tabla, xylophone, harmonica, guitar and the occassional soft-shoe.

$15.00 Buy Tickets

A double bill of two great bands.

Las Rubias del Norte
Las Rubias del Norte (the Blondes of the North,) are a group of musicians from the U.S, France and Colombia, who perform the music of, among many others, Guillermo Portabales of Cuba, Simon Diaz of Venezuela, Oscar Aviles of Peru and W.A. Mozart of Austria. The Rubias play mostly popular Latin music such as boleros, cha cha cha's and cumbias as well as lieder and cowboy songs - and manage to make it all sound like it belongs on Cuban radio. The Rubias make it all sound distinctly different thanks to the fabulous vocals of Allyssa Lamb and Emily Hurst and the various Rubios and Morenos who back them up.
