In the world of traditional acoustic music in the big city, the Ponkiesburg Pickin' Party is one of the longest running weekly jams. It was founded way back in October 2000 by Barbara Brousal, a Brooklyn native and wonderful songwriter/singer/guitarist/mandolinist. It was Barbara's idea for a few close friends to get together on Sundays and sit around and play traditional songs, with an emphasis on fun sing-a-long tunes that everyone can enjoy, regardless of skill level.
This is a steady and regular jam focusing on the Americana song-book. Each week sees the same regulars and new faces come by to share tunes, share stories and have a good time. Be sure to bring an instrument and some songs to sing when you drop by.
oh, in case you're wondering what ponkiesburg means:
The Dutch word "ponk," meaning "persistent player of stringed instruments," later transformed into the English "plonk." The name was applied to this hill just south of the town of Breukelen more than three hundred years ago, as it became known for occasional gatherings of musicians who would play into the night, or until the local farmers set the dogs loose. Archaelogical digs have uncovered broken strings, lost capos, cracked picks, and a fragment of a banjo neck with a dog's tooth embedded in it.
