About GoodMusicNY

We've been listening to and playing music in New York City for years and have always found it near impossible to dig through all the live events in this great city to find the ones that tickle our ears. This site was created to highlight the music we like to listen to and hopefully help you find refuge from the throngs of wanna-be-on-MTV bands who usually dominate the other listing sites out there.

Dumbo Arts Festival

DUMBO BrooklynFriday October 14th & Saturday October 15th

There's a big ol' festival going on in Dumbo Brooklyn. The galleries will be open to the public, the baby-strollers will be hogging the sidewalks and, as always, New York's own Jan Bell will be curating some of New Yorks best musical showcases.

The music will vary from American old-time to gypsy-punk-surf-rock, to Macedonean dances to honkey-tonk to, well, a little of everytthing. The lineup is as follows:

Wayne Hancock

Wayne HancockFriday, October 14th
10:00 pm
Rodeo Bar
375 Third avenue
Corner of 27th St.
Manhattan
Full Dinner Menu
Free

Wayne "The Train" Hancock has been called "the master of hillbilly swing," a "roots Renaissance man," a "country singer's country singer" and "Hank Williams meets Gershwin." But the phrase most frequently echoed throughout his career is "Wayne Hancock is the real deal." Joe Ely said it, Hank Williams III said it, Bobby Koefer from the Texas Playboys said it, as have countless music fans and writers when referring to Hancock's authentic and original blend of honky tonk, western swing, blues and big band that he calls "juke joint swing!"

Freddy's Hurricane Benefit

Bill Carneys Jug AddictsTuesday, October 11th
9:00 pm
Freddy's Back Room
485 Dean St.
Corner of 6th Avenue
Brooklyn

There's a benefit goin' on down at Freddy's Back Room. All proceeds will go to hurrican relief. There are apparently a number of bands playing (I've even heard a rumor that the Spunk Lads may make an appearance), however, the only confirmed listing I have is for the Jug Addicts. Think of it as a suprise. Go on down to Freddy's, support a good cause and see what the night may have to offer.

Bill Carney's Jug Addicts apply the twinning principal utilized by Ornette Coleman's early 60s groups and the Max Roach's Double Quartet to the jug band idiom. The result is a particularly robust and raucous jug band sound free of any archival obsessiveness. Comprised of jug band veterans culled from the Don't Look Now Jug Band, MetroPolecats, and Pork Chop, the Jug Addicts' repertoire draws from early jazz, tin pan alley, ragtime, and string band music, along with the classic jug band canon.

Gray vs Blue

Saturday, October 8th
4:00 pm - 2:00 am
The Hook
8 Commerce St.
Between Richards and Columbia
Red Hook, Brooklyn

A North-South battle of the bands to benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic (NOMC). This annual festival of rockabilly, country, beer and men in oversized caps brings together twenty-two bands from around the country to play music, whine over the lack of unblemished skin left to get tattooed and swill North Carolina Moonshine.

All the proceeds from this years festival will be donated to help musicians who were displaced by hurricane Katrina.

I'm not sure exactly what the schedule is but I do know the bands who are playing.

The Roulette Sisters in October

The Roulette Sisters
The Roulette Sisters are an all-girl trio in the tradition of the Boswell and the Andrews Sisters, these sisters play an American repertoire that spans the Carter Family, Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Pink Anderson, Memphis Minnie, Papa Charlie Jackson as well as original compositions. The sisters are rumored to have different fathers, but don't you go spreading rumors - they are strong believers in their own kind of familiy values. - and they can probably kick your ass anyway.

They have a very busy October this year. If you don't make it to at least one of their shows you'll kick yourself until the new year.
