About GoodMusicNY

We've been listening to and playing music in New York City for years and have always found it near impossible to dig through all the live events in this great city to find the ones that tickle our ears. This site was created to highlight the music we like to listen to and hopefully help you find refuge from the throngs of wanna-be-on-MTV bands who usually dominate the other listing sites out there.

The first Thursday of every month is the old timey jam/hootenanny at Freddy's Back Room. This monthly excursion into music from the pre-recorded era runs the gamut from bluegrass to old-time fiddle tunes to folk songs. Hosted by the Strung Out String Band, the old time jam is always packed with musicians and drunken Park Slopies. Bring instruments and friends and remember the rules.

About this site

Why create this site?

There is so much music in New York City and so many publications which promote it that it might seem strange to have created yet another website to provide information about what is going on around town. However, as local musicians and performers, we have found it very difficult to find a resource which provides information about some of the more interesting and fun local acts who play music that is not on the top-40 charts and who aren't playing at an expensive club.

We decided to create GoodMusicNY to fill the void that exists between the large promotional engines and the word-of-mouth networks we've typically used to promote our gigs. Hopefully, this site will become both a resource to find out what is happening around New York as well as a vibrant community bringing musicians and performers together.
