Sean Kershaw and the New Jack Ramblers

The New Jack RamblersWednesday, December 14th
10:00 pm
Rodeo Bar
375 Third avenue
Corner of 27th St.
Manhattan
Full Dinner Menu
Free

Sean Kershaw is the kind of drunk who makes things happen. In the past two years, he has gone from singing alone next to the pool table in a mostly empty dive bar to assembling an all-star classic country band; and, in the process, he has transformed Sunday nights at Hank’s Saloon into the place to be for ass-shaking Brooklyn honky-tonk. The lineup varies from week to week, but usually includes two guitars, a banjo, mandolin, bass, drums, and pedal steel., and features members of Uncle Fucker and, occasionally, someone from Sean's other, hard-rockin' band, The Blind Pharaohs. The set list rests heavily on the classics—Hank, Johnny, Merle, assorted bluegrass—but also veers into the realm of originals, Pogues covers, and a crowd-frenzying rendition of “Eastbound and Down” (a.k.a. the theme from Smokey and the Bandit.) When these boys play, there are only two things you can be sure of: Somebody in the band is gonna end up loaded, and somebody in the audience is gonna end up dancing.

Jack Grace BandIt’s a rare person who can actually make a living playing any kind of music in New York City, let alone country. But Brooklyn-born Jack Grace seems to be doing a good job of cornering the market--whether it's in the back room of Howard Johnson's, or warming up ballrooms for Merle Haggard.

With a warmly understated vintage-hollowbody sound, a crack team of backup folks (including, on various occasions, lap steel, organ, and accordion), and a booming set of pipes that sound like some long-lost Texas crooner remastered, Jack and the gang can be found on some back-corner stage most nights of the week, belting out future country-rock classics, and busting their asses to make it sound easy.

This October there are a number of opportunities to hear Jack Grace play:
