Why create this site?
There is so much music in New York City and so many publications which promote it that it might seem strange to have created yet another website to provide information about what is going on around town. However, as local musicians and performers, we have found it very difficult to find a resource which provides information about some of the more interesting and fun local acts who play music that is not on the top-40 charts and who aren't playing at an expensive club.
We decided to create GoodMusicNY to fill the void that exists between the large promotional engines and the word-of-mouth networks we've typically used to promote our gigs. Hopefully, this site will become both a resource to find out what is happening around New York as well as a vibrant community bringing musicians and performers together.
Types of music featured
Since we are all local musicians we spend probably too much time in bars and clubs around the city listening to music of all different sorts. Rather than just being another Villiage Voice and listing anything under the sun we want to focus our attention (and consequently, yours) on music that we like to hear. We hope the filters and reviews we provide will aid rather than hinder you in using this site as a resource. While musical preference is incredibly personal I hope am confident that you will find our tastes to your liking.
In general, here are the types of music we'll be featuring:
- American Old-Time
- Bluegrass
- Eastern European & Klezmer
- Cajun
- Swing & Jug Bands
- Country & Honkey Tonk
- Gamelan ensembles & Tibetan Chant
While we have nothing at all against hip-hop, metal, electroclash(+) or math rock(+), there are plenty of other resources to find where those bands are playing.
Plans for the future
This site is very new and we are still working the bugs out of the system. We have many plans for the future and would love help (unpaid of course....) if you are interested.
Here are some features we're thinking of adding to the site:
- Music downloads to hear what the bands sound like
- Individual blogs for the different bands to give them a place to promote themselves
- Ecommerce to let the bands featured here promote themselves
- Reviews of venues and bands to help readers decide where they'd like to spend an evening
Help Us
Here are some of the people we'd like to find. However, even if you don't have experience doing anything mentioned below but would still like to help we would love to hear from you.
- Content Editors - to help us write reviews and articles
- PHP Programmers - to help us build the site
- Musicians & Performers - to help us promote their gigs
